Haven Court, built in the grounds of South Tyneside District Hospital, will provide a range of services including residential, day and respite care, as well as rehabilitation, particularly for older people with dementia. The centre, which has its entrance on McAnany Avenue, South Shields, is scheduled to open on August 1. Dr Bob Brown, the foundation trust's executive director of nursing and patient safety, said: "Haven Court is an exciting, innovative development of which everyone in South Tyneside can be very proud. "It will improve the health and wellbeing of our growing ageing population, and the increasing numbers of people with dementia, by providing integrated health and social care in state of the art surroundings now and into the future. Coun Tracey Dixon, the council's lead member for independence and wellbeing, said: "Haven Court is one strand of the council's ambitious strategy to reshape the entire health and social care system. By integrating health and adult social care more effectively, we can deliver enhanced services to our residents.
" Robertson Construction began work on the building in spring last year. It was designed by P+HS Architects to cater for different clinical needs and for those with varying degrees of dementia. There are internal and external features, such as special colour schemes, to help people find their way around and to support independent living and general wellbeing.
