"You really have to prioritize and that's what I've really focused on once I got here." "A lot of people don't see that. They think the athletes are coddled and babied and they get to take classes that are different than some of our others. We've got student athletes filling our roster like Kiley that are taking advanced classes that are really challenging themselves academically." "It' juggling everything. As a student athlete you're expected to do everything, you're expected to get all your study coach outlet nags head nc hours in and you're supposed to get good grades. You have to coach outlet locations factory stores az attend class and perform well in sports." Freshman volleyball player at LCCC, Kiley Ridgway, is learning how to balance academics and athletics "Here it's a lot of work, you know, and that's the one thing I learned since I got here is that I do need to make lists." For head coach Austin Albers it's as important for his players like Kiley to flex their brain muscles as much as coach outlet albertville mn online the ones in their arms and legs. "It is like working a full time job with manual labor involved. We're not asking them to go sit in a class and sit down and relax in front of a computer for ten hours a day. We're asking them to get on the court and give one hundred percent effort in the weight room, running, whatever we're doing, conditioning." Inside the classroom, coaches and professors ask student athletes to give 100 percent as well. "Right when I got here, the first thing when we moved in we went over the handbook and he said you have three priorities. In this order, academics, athletics, social life." "We do grade reports and grade checks periodically every three to six weeks depending where the student athlete was at their last grade report. We also send out an email every week to all of their instructors asking for any major progress, whether it's positive or negative. Things we need to keep an eye on." "The coaches know that if there's some kind of a problem they gotta get on it because if one of their students doesn't make the grade, then they can't go out and play. And that could be the difference between winning or losing in a game or a match." Even on game days, student athletes work to cram in their assignments right before deadline. "We got back about 11:37 and we had kids with papers due at 11:55 that are running off the bus to get to their dorm to get on the internet so they can get their stuff turned in." Although classes run Monday through Thursday for Kiley, workouts and practices can go on all week long. "Practice Monday through Saturday and games amidst all that, if we have a game on Friday or Saturday and we have some extra things to work on then we're gonna practice on Sunday night." Ridgway credits her close bond with teammates as a key to her success both on and off the court "Oh yeah, we're a complete unit. You know, you get one of us you get all of us. It's amazing and the one thing I love since I've been here, we're all here for each other all the time. Once we bring that to the court, and we have it all together it's unstoppable." At LCCC, Kiley is focusing on a biology degree. "Right now my plan is to go to another college and go on to pharmaceutical schooling and get my pharmaceutical degree to some day be a pharmacist." Because like most college athletes, she'll be going pro in something other than sports. "Very few of our players are going to go on and play professional volleyball. If any, they won't be doing it for very long, so they're going to have to have something to fall back on." "I want LCCC to completely prepare myself for whatever other coach outlet atlanta usa schooling I have or if I decide to play on I know that my coaches are going to prepare me for that.
I know they're going to help me do whatever I need to do to get me there. That's all I could ever hope for.".
